Jeannies Field Notes: The Best Designed Blog 🏆

Jeannie's Field Notes exudes charm, inspiration, and a sense of adventure.

It’s definitely among the best designed blog out there. Here’s why:

  • Clear navigation: From the navigation bar and home page, visitors are guided to the topics they want and the a wide variety of blog posts.

  • Clever use of illustrations to break up the monotonous grids of blog posts

  • Consistent branding throughout the site in little details like text underlining

  • Clean blog post layout with no distracting elements

You could say that Jeannie has “foresee” (4Cs) the success of her blog (pls excuse my terrible joke, can’t help it sometimes).

Relentlessly Sassy: If Barbie Had A Blog

If you have a strong brand personality, don't be afraid to let it shine through your blog design. Relentlessly Sassy does this exceptionally with a pink color scheme and fun layouts.

Noteworthy design choices:

  • Usability studies have shown that mega menus work better than regular dropdowns. If your blog has many navigation options, using a mega menu can improve the user experience.

  • Affiliate product links are incorporated in a helpful, context-driven manner, making it easier for visitors to make a purchase decision.

  • The Shop link is highlighted on the top navigation bar, a subtle nudge to get more visitors on the page.

Sustainably Chic: Minimalism Meets Typography

Sustainably Chic offers a warm, modern blog design that neatly balances text and visuals. a clean grid structure is used throughout the site, creating a balanced and easy-to-scan layout.

Special Feature

What made this blog immediately stood out to me is the advanced search bar that allows for both text and voice searches. This function doesn’t exist in Squarespace (even their text-based search engine is often spotty 😒). I looked inside their codes and found that this feature is provided by Expertrec Custom Search Engine. You can use their 14-day free trial to see if it’s compatible with your Squarespace template.

Ashley Chymiy Blog: Professionally Cute

Who said a business blog can’t be full of warmth, charm, and fuzziness? The feminine color palette, hand-drawn illustrations, and gentle fonts convey a sense of playfulness and sincerity. This design choice perfectly supports Ashley’s overall business and authenticity resonates with her audience.

  • Blog post layout includes a sidebar that guides visitors to explore more pages and gentle nudges them towards different call-to-actions.

  • Built-in Pinterest graphics and pin buttons within every blog post (no question why she has over 11k followers on Pinterest)

Travel Taale: Long Content That Don’t Bored

Travel Taale is a great example of providing clarity and user guidance. Many blogs tend to feel overwhelming because visitors don’t know what to read first. Travel Taale provided suggestions to start with the three most popular destinations, which solve this problem. In long blog posts (which many of them are), images are used throughout to illustrate specific points and break up the text, enhancing the reading experience.

Special Feature

Travel Taale uses the archive block to create a simple category filter. For beginners, this is the easiest option to create a filter within Squarespace. Combine that with the default search bar and you’ve got a good starting point for blog navigation.

The Terri Lowe: Less Is More

Terri’s blog has a clean and minimal design with a near-total absence of distractions. Putting social icons on the main navigation is generally not recommended, but it fits her blog as a social media influencer. This blog blends written content and product recommendations seamlessly.

Special Feature

What makes this blog special is the advanced filters within each blog topic, allowing visitors to filter, sort, and do keyword searches to find the content they need. This feature creates a much better user experience for her food recipe collection.

This feature is created by the Universal Filter plugin. This is one of the most versatile and helpful Squarespace plugins in the market, but a fair warning that it’s not the easiest one to set up.

Joanna Fisher's blog is dreamy and elegant. Images, fonts, and spacing create a unified and luxurious feel.

Special Feature

The blog uses custom codes to turn the summary block into a vertical timeline. If you’re comfortable with coding, here’s the free tutorial from Beatriz Caraballo for creating a vertical timeline. For an easier route, try the vertical timeline plugin from Code and Tonic. I haven’t tried the plugin myself but it seems very promising!
